The summer heat presents a variety of unique challenges: sun damage, dehydration, higher gas costs, etc. However, the top priority for the summer is making sure your home is cool; that means your air-conditioning (AC) unit has to be in top shape. Like car repairs, the best air-conditioning or refrigeration repairs are the kind you prevent with proper maintenance. Try some of these basic maintenance repairs to make your AC system last.
Change the Filter
As a rule, change your AC filter at least once a month. Otherwise, built up debris and dirt will affect the efficiency of your AC unit. Regular filters are available for purchase at most home improvement stores, but remember to ask a maintenance person for specifics before installing a specialized type of filter.
Clean the Drain
A cap can be bought from your local hardware store to use for cleaning the air-conditioning drain. After capping the side of the drain, locate the external end of the drain and use a vacuum to remove dirt and leaves.
Maintain your Condenser Unit
If you have central air conditioning, it is very likely you have a condenser unit on the outside of your house. Within it are the condenser coils and the fan that helps keep them cool, both of which are vulnerable to debris and growth while outside. Try using a sheet or retail unit cover to keep the condenser clean during cooler months when you don’t use the air conditioner.
Clean the Coils
Using a condenser cleaner, flush the coils until they are free of residue. Do not simply use the hose—water mixing with mud could actually contribute to the mud and muck giving your AC trouble in the first place.
