When you hear people refer to carbon monoxide as “the silent killer,” they're not being overly dramatic. As reported by Good Morning America, each year over 200 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning in this country, and several thousand more end up very sick. Unlike natural gas which has a rotten egg smell, carbon monoxide is odorless making it much more dangerous to indoor air quality.
Heating systems keep us warm during those cold winters while air conditioning makes summers bearable, even under the intense Las Vegas sun. We tend to forget about these systems until they break down and we get uncomfortable, but their maintenance can help prevent a dangerous carbon monoxide buildup.
Here are a couple of tips to keep you and your family safe.
- Yearly Checkups. Many of the HVAC systems in Las Vegas are neglected unless they break down and don't get their annual maintenance. Regular maintenance will not only keep you cool during the summers, but technicians will inspect for carbon monoxide leaks, which will keep you safe.
- Carbon Monoxide Detectors. You have smoke alarms, but carbon monoxide alarms are just as important and cost less than $100. Heating during the winter is crucial, and if your heater is leaking this dangerous chemical a detector will tell you right away. It will also detect it from sources like fireplaces and stoves that you may not get checked as often.
- Don't Burn Fuels Inside. This means don't warm up your car inside the garage during those cold winter mornings. It also means not using a generator inside for home improvement projects, or in case of power outages.
Regular inspections of your HVAC system, inexpensive detectors, and some simple common sense will keep you, and your family, safe.
